Después de 15 años como miembro del grupo de Hermeto Pascoal, el excelente pianista (y flautista) Jovino Santos Neto (Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 1954) pasó a residir en Seattle (Washington, EEUU) para completar sus estudios musicales y graduarse en dirección en el Cornish College of the Arts. Allí también dio sus primeras pasos como educador y formó su primer cuarteto junto a otros colegas profesores de esa prestigiosa escuela de música. Tras un año de ensayos, el cuarteto realizó su presentación pública recogida en esta grabación en la que interpretó las composiciones y arreglos originales de Jovino ante un público entusiasta. Una grabación histórica ya que es anterior a la del primer álbum de estudio como líder.

"This live recording captures the very first public performance of the legendary quartet led by 3-time Latin Grammy nominee Brazilian pianist-composer Jovino Santos Neto, with Hans Teuber on saxophones and flute, Mark Ivester on drums and the sadly departed Chuck Deardorf on bass. After one year of rehearsals, the Quarteto played Jovino’s original compositions and arrangements to an enthusiastic audience at Seattle’s historic Kerry Hall on April 28, 1995. Bruce Phares wrote in his liner notes to the album:
Each track displays Jovino’s genius for bringing a broad palette of lush and advanced tonalities, interlacing gentle evocative melodies seamlessly with jagged chaotic key changes, and then returning to classic Brazilian samba, only to rollercoaster on to another engaging and provocative section in each of these lustrous compositions. The entire concert is a study in musical expertise. Some of the most talented NW musicians gathered in demonstrable excitement and joy as a living unit, like a journey through a book with many different chapters. The underlying Brazilian rhythms, overlaid by Jovino‘s composed sections, are brilliantly interpreted by these masters of their instruments. Cutting edge comes to mind.
