Grabado en la Sala São Paulo, en São Paulo, en febrero de 2002.

"The São Paulo Symphony Choir (Osesp Choir) was created in 1994, and it has been associated to the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra since 2001. The choir explores a large and varied repertoire spanning different musical periods, in both a capella and symphonic genres. A special emphasis is placed on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as on works by Brazilian composers.
The Osesp Choir has recorded several albums for Naxos including works by Bernstein with the Baltimore Symphony, conducted by Marin Alsop (8.559742); Villa-Lobos’s Choral Transcriptions (8.574286); and Almeida Prado’s Pequenos funerais cantantes ao poeta Carlos Maria de Araújo (8.574411).
Since its first concert in 1954, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo – Osesp) has become an essential part of São Paulo and Brazilian culture, promoting cultural and social transformation. Each season, Osesp performs over a hundred concerts at its home venue, Sala São Paulo, reaching nearly 150,000 people.
Thierry Fischer has served as music director since 2020, succeeding Marin Alsop, Yan Pascal Tortelier, John Neschling, Eleazar de Carvalho, Bruno Roccella and João de Souza Lima. The orchestra has undertaken four national tours and fifteen international tours, performing in the United States and China, as well as various countries across Latin America and Europe.
Osesp has released over 100 albums, earning critical acclaim from publications such as Gramophone and prestigious awards, including the Latin GRAMMY for Best Classical Music Album (2007) and the Diapason d’Or (2008, 2009, 2010).
The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra runs a large educational and outreach programme for over 25,000 children and teenagers every season. It has its own children, youth and symphonic choirs, as well as a Music Academy, offering professional guidance to young orchestral musicians, singers and conductors.

Claudio Santoro (1919-1989) began his musical training in his native city of Manaus. An extremely talented violinist, he received a local government scholarship to continue his studies in Rio de Janeiro, and his earliest works date from this period. His First Symphony, written in 1940 when he was just 21 and had not yet begun to study composition in any formal way, impressed the German musician and teacher Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, leader of the ‘Música Viva’ movement, made up of young composers seeking out new directions in which to take Brazilian music, in line with the European avant-garde of the time.
In the late 1940s, however, Santoro’s music took a radical turn, as a result of his political-ideological convictions and his role as the Brazilian delegate to the 1948 Prague Congress of Progressive Composers, whose final manifesto urged composers to avoid excessive subjectivity and look to their national folk traditions for inspiration. The works Santoro wrote during the 1950s were influenced by his search for a more direct and immediately communicative idiom, an effect he achieved by using nationalist elements."
